    Initiating CPR...

Take this job and shove it!
Given cutbacks, not all employees are playing nice when they quit
I find it interesting that when an employer lays off a worker without notice, or cuts their pay in any of a number of ways, also without notice, they consider this good business practice.  Now some employees are returning the favor and companies are QQing foul.  I am sorry Ms. Eve Tahmincioglu, unless we all play by the same rules the game is not fair, I am calling your article and business practices in regards to employees shenanigans and writing you off.

Conservatives taken aback by Palin's decision to resign
I would venture a guess that a few years from now she can cry about how hard people were on her.  The voters will be far more forgiving of that than a conviction on abuse of power and an impeachment.  Besides, she can make far more money making the rounds of the speaking circuit now.

Sorry about the absence - life, on occasion, gives us a wake up call and we have to leave the comfort of our preconceptions in move into the real world for a while before once again curling up in our coccoons of rationalized comfort.

I have, however, been following the actions of the G "NO" P and the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor with some amusement.  It will be interesting to see what emerges out of the self-marginalization of the conservatives to accomodate the actual majority of moderates in this country that they are trying so hard to alienate.

George W Bush on the other hand is doing the first intelligent thing that he has ever done in his life, he is keeping his mouth shut and his head down.

  • Sorry - I have been busier than a one legged person playing Dance Dance Revolution.

    FOX News
OK - so my search for relevance on the FOX News web site has died stillborn.  I found almost nothing there that has to do with the most pressing issues in the US or the world.  Two of their "TOP US Stories" today:
Kangaroo Loose in Upstate New York
Man Finds Snake Head in Broccoli at New York Diner

Nothing about jobs, foreclosures, the economy, unless you look in the politics section.  Then there is one item on New Jobless Claims Drop to Lowest Level Since January, also YOU DECIDE: Is Jimi Hendrix a Good Educational Role Model?

So if I understand it jobs and education are politics?!?  I suppose if you are voting for people who want to withhold a decent education to tens of millions of children and don't care if your neighbor is selling drugs on the streets because he can't feed his family because some politician sent his job to China, THEN jobs are politics.  To me, they are education and the economy, and BOTH are US news.

  • Defining the difference between "Conservative" and "Liberal"...

Yesterday the following article caught my eye.

Liberals and Conservatives Hold Different Moral Foundations

Now, on the face of it, this is obvious, but a little deeper reading and and analysis yields a lot to think about.

First, they base their analysis on what they call the "five foundations".

    These are:
    1.    harm/care
    2.    fairness/reciprocity
    3.    ingroup/loyalty
    4.    authority/respect
    5.    purity/sanctity

Liberals place the most weight on the first two and conservatives spread out their moral foundation among all five.  Now, no one I know would mistake me for a conservative, and I do place emphasis on harm/care, which I consider to be protection from predators and giving a person the opportunity to grow.  I also place emphasis on fairness/reciprocity which is what I call "justice".  Now, my personal sense of "protection" and "justice" will not allow me to screw over a stranger to help a friend although I will go way out of my way to help a friend.  It will also not allow me to screw over anyone just because a "leader" told me to.  I do not believe that anyone has unquestionable authority and what they do had better make sense according to my values. Finally, I do not believe that I can push my religious beliefs on anyone just because I do not approve of their actions, "judge not lest ye be judged..." holds a lot of weight for me.  I have seen a lot of "annotated" versions of this where people try and justify being judgemental, but they all ring hollow with me.  I prefer to try and be an example rather than a critic, but my sense of protectiveness and justice can override this when people are harming others.

  • Concerned...

A friend of mine who is pretty far, (compared to me), to the right mentioned to me that NPR was so far to the left that it was "socialist".  I consider MSNBC to the left, but I have always considered NPR pretty good about telling both sides of a story.  Since this concerned me, I decided to do a comparison of top US stories from both FOX news, which I consider right and NPR which I don't.  I am leaving MSNBC out because they spend most of their time making fun of FOX.  At about the same time this morning I captured the national "top stories" from both sites dated April 20th and 21st.  They follow, with a vague attempt to categorize the story.

An analysis shows that the important distinction lies more in what is not covered than what is covered.  FOX covered many of the more violent stories across the nation along with a few asides to animal stories and domestic terrorists.  NPR covered health care/insurance stories Pulitzer Prize winners, politics, the economy, and was in general much more widely based in its stories.

If I think about FOX's patrons I can surmise why FOX wouldn't want to cover the anniversary of the Columbine shootings, (NRA), and about the economy (GOP), but I would think that some news is worthy of attention regardless of which side you are on.

At any rate, this is not nearly enough data for a definitive sample.  I will try again with my next post.

Just a side note, no one that I know of from FOX, MSNBC, or NPR has won a Pulitzer in the last 10 years, but a lot of people from what are considered "liberal media" sources have.

The cost of dying and other stories...

Recession leaves funeral business in grave state
I have long thought the funeral industry a predatory industry, perhaps this is unjust, but it is still my opinion.  On the face of it, we really don't have much of a choice, you cannot just wrap Uncle Harry in newspaper and bury him in the garden.  I understand that the "home funeral" is making a comeback, but there are lots of considerations that surround that option that can be painful or hazardous.  The other side of the coin is the $5000 (on the average) that a mortuary funeral costs.  It seems rather excessive, and while I admit that I do not know what goes on behind the scenes, even buying a simple pine casket for $1000 seems rather excessive and I can buy a pine table with much more wood for less than half of that price.  I have been involved in a few funerals and have seen the pressure that these people bring to bear on people who may be grief stricken and not thinking clearly.  I cannot say that I am surprised at this turn of events.

Right-wing extremism may be on rise, report says
How often do we hear about "left-wing" extremism?  A quick search of Google showed about 47 thousand hits for "left-wing extremism" and a cursory glance showed these are mainly from conservative sites and blogs.  On the other hand, a search for "right-wing extremism" turned up about 860 thousand hits and a cursory glance showed those to be coming from news organizations and blogs.  I find it enlightening that the Neo-Nazis, the KKK and a few other groups of people align themselves with the "right".  If I were over there on the right, I would probably want to look around and see who I was standing with.

  • An interesting evening...

So last night I happened to scan across the channels and stopped on CSPAN where Rush Limbaugh was addressing CPAC I believe, and since I find him immensely humorous I stopped to listen for a bit and for the first time in my life, I heard some serious things come out of his mouth.  Now this was serious in the sense of "not joking or trifling" and "having important or dangerous possible consequences" which is indeed a double hit for him.

One thing he said was basically, the the recession of the 80's ended because of tax cuts.  He totaly ignores the FACT that Reagan was forced to raise taxes on several occasions before he left office because he screwed up.  Silly me, bringing facts to bear on Limbaugh..

Another thing he said was "Next thing, we've got to stop treating voters as children.  [Applause] Somebody says they want something that's bad for them, do you give it to them just to be nice?  Or do you tell them, regardless of their age, no, you shouldn't have that?", followed closely by "But you still have to have the ability to tell people what's right and wrong. And that's not authoritative. That's not authoritarian."  Lets examine that for a second, so telling voters that they can't have something they voted for is the way government should work?  Isn't telling someone you can't have something treating them like a child?  Isn't telling people what is right and wrong, (relative terms if I have ever heard them), authoritarian?  The word, authority, from which the word authoritarian is derived means ,"power to influence or command thought, opinion, or behavior", so telling people what is right and wrong isn't trying to "influence or command thought, opinion, or behavior"?  WOW, he really has his own dictionary.

He was addressing this body because they granted him the "Defender of the Constitution" Award.  Interesting that the defender of the constitution should be promoting a government where a few people tell everyone what is right and wrong, that doesn't sound like our constitution at all.

Finally, as I was driving to work this morning, thinking of what I had heard last night, I noticed that the car in front of me had a bumper sticker that read, "HATE is not a family value", and I thought, how true, and how typical of the mouthpiece of the party of "Family Values" to so obviously point out their failures though his actions.
